Making a wreath out of deco mesh can be intimidating. I’ve seen so many beautiful wreaths on Pinterest and I decided that it was time I learned how to make my own. I found a super easy tutorial for a neutral fall wreath and away I went with the process of making my own easy DIY 4th of July deco mesh wreath. I am super proud of how this turned out and can’t wait to add it to the rest of my patriotic decor on the front porch.

I am linking the blog post that I followed below. The wreath that she makes is a neutral wreath for fall. Her video does an awesome job at showing how to form the deco mesh ruffles and applying them to the wreath. Before I send you that way, I’m going to go through the variations I used to make it a patriotic wreath.

Things You Will Need:

  • rotary cutter and cutting mat (scissors will also work)
  • 14” metal wreath form (Dollar Tree has them!)
  • small zip ties
  • chenille wires or pipe cleaners
  • (2) rolls of 10” x 30’ deco mesh (I did one roll of navy/tan and one roll of metallic red)
  • (4) rolls of 2.5” patriotic wired ribbon that compliment your deco mesh
  • wire cutters

I got my ribbon, deco mesh and pipe cleaners from Hobby Lobby. My wreath form came from Amazon, but Dollar tree has them. The zip ties came from Walmart, although I think Hobby Lobby has some as well.

Step 1: Cutting the Deco Mesh

Go ahead and cut your deco mesh into 30” pieces. You will use up the entire roll doing this. This will leave you with a total of 24 pieces after you’ve cut both rolls. Discard (or save) the small amount that is leftover, if any.

Step 2: Cutting the Ribbon

Cut (8) 14 inch pieces from each of your ribbon rolls. Next, cut the “v” into both ends of each ribbon. The easiest way to do this is to fold the ribbon in half and cut at an angle from the folded side to the end of the ribbon.

Step 3: Assembling Your Ribbon Bunches

Lay the ribbons flat and layer in different directions, starting with the one you would like to be in the back. As you can see, I started with the white jute one first. I then did the stripes and stars ribbon. I finished with the red ribbon and the see-through navy on top.

Step 4: Applying Everything to the Wreath Form to finish your 4th of July Deco Mesh Wreath

Follow The Birch’s Cottage’s step-by-step video tutorial to add everything to your wreath form. Note the changes I made from her tutorial. I used patriotic colors instead of neutral. I added a 4th ribbon to my bunches and I did eight bunches of ribbon instead of seven. However, adding everything will be the same at this point and you will be finishing your DIY 4th of July deco mesh wreath in no time!
